إليكم ما حدث في إل باسو وفقًا لمصادر متعددة مطلعة: خطط البنتاغون لاستخدام ليزر عالي الطاقة مضاد للطائرات المسيّرة دون التنسيق المسبق مع إدارة الطيران الفيدرالية بشأن المخاطر المحتملة على الرحلات الجوية المدنية. وقد كان البنتاغون يختبر هذه التقنية منذ فترة في مناطق نائية، وكان من المقرر أن يجتمع مسؤولون من إدارة الطيران الفيدرالية والبنتاغون في 20 فبراير لمراجعة الآثار المحتملة وتدابير التخفيف لاختبار نظام الليزر. ولكن لأسباب غير واضحة (ربما كان هناك اختراق بطائرة مسيّرة، وهو ما يحدث عدة مرات خلال 24 ساعة)، سعى البنتاغون إلى نشر النظام في وقت أقرب حول إل باسو، مما دفع إدارة الطيران الفيدرالية إلى فرض حظر طيران مؤقت لحين التنسيق المناسب. وكان من المقرر أن ينتهي الحظر الذي يستمر 10 أيام في 21 فبراير، أي بعد يوم واحد من الموعد المقرر لاجتماع وزارة الدفاع وإدارة الطيران الفيدرالية. ولم تُبلغ إدارة الطيران الفيدرالية البيت الأبيض بقرارها إغلاق المجال الجوي.
أفاد مسؤول في الإدارة الأمريكية لشبكة CNN أن طائرات مسيرة تابعة المخدرات المكسيكية اخترقت المجال الجوي الأمريكي، مما أدى إلى إغلاق مؤقت للمجال الجوي فوق مدينة إل باسو بولاية تكساس، والذي تم رفعه لاحقاً. وبحسب مصدرين مطلعين على الأمر، فقد جاء إغلاق المجال الجوي نتيجة لنشاط عسكري أمريكي مرتبط بالقوات المخدرات.
